The Leadership Gap

Your best engineers don't automatically become your best leaders.

Your strongest engineers were promoted because they could solve difficult problems. Now they're expected to lead people, influence stakeholders, make decisions through uncertainty, delegate effectively and develop the next layer of talent. That's where the friction often begins.

01

Brilliant engineers who struggle to lead people

Technical expertise gets someone promoted. It doesn't necessarily teach them how to manage performance, navigate conflict, delegate or build trust.

02

Senior leaders who remain the bottleneck

When decisions, technical knowledge and stakeholder relationships remain concentrated in one person, the organisation becomes dependent on individuals rather than leadership systems.

03

High-performing teams that aren't aligned

Different functions, personalities and priorities can pull in different directions — particularly across complex projects, programmes and multidisciplinary environments.

04

Managers promoted faster than they're developed

A new title doesn't create leadership capability. Without deliberate development, technically excellent people can spend years learning leadership through expensive trial and error.

05

Leadership problems that become execution problems

Communication breakdowns, weak accountability, poor delegation and unresolved conflict don't stay in the HR department. They affect delivery.

The objective isn't to turn engineers into generic corporate managers. It's to help technically credible people become leaders who can perform at the scale the organisation now requires.
Why David Bush

Coaching grounded in the reality of engineering.

David Bush isn't an executive coach who learned engineering leadership from a textbook. He has lived it.

Across a career spanning major international engineering and infrastructure environments, David has managed large multinational and multicultural teams and held Client and Project Director responsibilities on major projects.

His experience spans civil, electrical and mechanical engineering environments, giving him a practical understanding of the technical, commercial and human pressures that senior engineering leaders operate under.

That matters. Leadership development is more effective when the person delivering it understands what it means to make decisions when the project is moving, the stakeholders disagree, the team is under pressure and the cost of getting it wrong is significant.

"I don't teach engineering leaders how to sound like leaders. I help them lead more effectively when the work, the people and the stakes are real."

The Engineering Leadership
Maturity Audit

A self assessment built for decision makers who need evidence, not impressions. Score your engineering managers across the four capabilities that decide whether a programme lands on time and on budget.

01

Communication

Whether risk, status and bad news travel upward fast enough to be acted on.

02

High Stakes Decision Making

Who decides, how quickly, and what happens when the data is incomplete.

03

Team Performance Under Pressure

What your delivery teams actually do in the weeks that decide the programme.

04

Risk & Commercial Awareness

Whether your technical leads understand the commercial weight of their decisions.

It surfaces the communication bottlenecks and leadership gaps that cause overruns, while they are still cheap to fix.

The Corporate Engagement Process

Start with the problem. Build the solution around it.

There is no standard programme waiting on a shelf. We start by understanding what is happening inside your organisation, then design the intervention around the outcome you need.

01

MAP

Understand the organisation before prescribing the solution.

Leadership capability · Team dynamics · Organisational context · Business priorities · Execution challenges
02

ALIGN

Define what better leadership needs to look like.

Identify the behaviours, capabilities and outcomes that will make the greatest difference.
03

EXECUTE

Build and deliver the right combination of interventions.

1:1 coaching + team coaching + workshops + leadership bootcamps + keynote speaking
04

MEASURE

Make progress visible.

Agree meaningful indicators of progress and evaluate whether leadership behaviour and organisational performance are changing.
Better leaders. Stronger teams. More effective execution.
